65 km far from Montalbano Elicona

Taormina is the “pearl” of the Ionic Sea, an important tourist centre spread on a rocky plateau 200 m above the sea level facing the Etna volcano.

Do not miss:

  • The theatre: of Greek origins, transformed and expanded in the Roman age. Today, it is the centre of Taormina Art, an international film festival, theatre, ballet and music shows during summer time.
  • Corso Umberto I – it is a quiet uphill street, full of nice shops, restaurants and coffee bars.
  • Corvaja Palace – with its exhibition of “pupi” and “carretti siciliani” (typical Sicilian marionettes and historical barrows) which are wood curved and iron wrought.
  • Piazza IX Aprile- a charming small square overlooking the sea where you can enjoy a nice panoramic view of the gulf and mount Etna.
  • Piazza del Duomo- with a beautiful baroque fountain built of Taormina stone on a circular base and the cathedral dedicated to S. Nicholas di Bari, which dates back to XIII century.
  • The Palaces of Taormina- in gothic style with Arabic-Norman influences constitute a pleasant view of the old town.
  • Villa Comunale gardens- full of flowers and exotic plants.
